ENGLISH COURSES OFFERED

Below is a brief description of English courses offered at VCHS. 

English 10-1

     In the English 10-1 program, a student relates literary experience to personal experience in order to begin developing competence in both wirtten and oral forms; understands the similarities and differences between modern and Shakespearean dramas; recognizes stylistic devices inherent to short story, novel and poetry; and learns to identify errors in punctuation, grammar and usage.

English 10-2

     In this course stduents produce personal and exploratory writing, read literature to expand experience, proofread with an emphasis on reducing errors, and respond to material read, heard, and viewed.

English 20-1

     In English 20-1 a student builds upon those skills and concepts developed in English 10-1.  He learns to develop and support a clearly defined thesis with convincing written argument in preparation for his grade 12 diploma exam and becomes acquainted with the stylistic devices which sep apart significant authors.

English 20-2

     In this course students learn to write for various purposes and audiences, examine ideas and values expressed through literature, correct writing errors and explore purpose and effect of print and image.

 

English 30-1

     In addition to enriching those skills developed in English 10-1 and 20-1, an English 30-1 student learns to clearly plan, focus and present his point of view in both a critical / analytical essay and a personal response essay; to evaluate literary techniques; and to develop mature interpretive skills.

     The writing of a provincial diploma exam is required to complete this course.

English 30-2

     This course improves upon skills and concepts developed in English 10-2 and 20-2.  Students explore values and ideas in literacy selections and films, respond to visual communication, and learn to write functional prose.

     The writing of a provincial diploma exam is required to complete this course.
