Industrial Education 7, 8, & 9

Industrial Education at the Junior High School level is designed to provide students with guided exploratory experiences.  The program will help them put to use their academic learning by applying it to practical situations.  Students are provided with tools, equipment, and materials to produce numerous projects.  These projects involve wood, metal, plastic, earth, graphic communication, photography, and several energy-related technologies.  Industrial Education involves a great deal of hands-on activity with emphasis on workplace safety, time management, working with others, producing quality work,  being environmentally friendly, and keeping the workplace clean and organized.  The program is designed around the motto "Learn to do by doing".

Construction Technologies

Construction technology begins in grade nine. Students are introduced to the processes and procedures of the woods workshop.  This course is the equivalent to one high school credit of approximately 25 hours.  Students learn to measure (feet and inches) and cut wood to correct dimensions to produce a final product. Classroom work is also a part of this course where students begin to learn the details of project management. This involves the estimating and costing of materials.

At the grade ten level students will complete their training on all the machines. They are required to plan their projects from start to finish.  Students also have time to work on Home Projects for themselves (bookcases, dog houses, coffee tables etc).

At the grade eleven and twelve the course focuses on the carpentry trade skills. Students complete five high school credits at each grade that include, Framing, Roofing (1 & 2), Exterior Finishing (doors, windows), Cabinet Making, Stair building, Kitchen Renovation(design and estimation).  Extra credits are available in basic welding (mig), wood turning.

Any student who completes all three years with full credits can gain 375 hours towards their first year of apprenticeship in the carpentry trade.
